30 Day Planking Challenge in June

Miracle Boy

My best friend and his wife were expecting a beautiful baby boy in 2016, Baby M. The pregnancy was healthy till in the last trimester expected mum Lady E was diagnosed with gestational diabetes Mellitus (GDM). When she attended her last scan and was told she needed an emergency C-section. Baby M was born at Kings College Hospital (KCH) in October 2016 via emergency C-section. At birth baby M couldn't breathe, and this lasted for a good 4 minutes, the resus team was able to resuscitate baby M and rushed him to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where baby M was treated for Meconium aspiration.

His condition deteriorated and was on life support machine. Overnight, Lady E and my friend received a telephone phone call at 3 am from one of the NICU nurses asking them to attend the hospital immediately. Upon arrival, they were asked to wait in the bereavement room. They waited there until after board round at 9am, then the consultant came and spoke to them. Giving them the bad news that Baby M only has 25% of system oxygen which also means he only has a 25% chance to survive. If Baby M survives, he will suffer from permanent brain damage and severe disability. At this point, they were both feeling very helpless and hopeless, but they are both true believers, and they trusted God will take control of the situation. Lady E was very positive about the whole situation.

My friend requested a second opinion from another consultant who said baby M should be given a second chance, and he was willing to take the risk on baby M. He requested to take Baby M to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and suggested 2 other hospitals for baby M to have Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Baby M was transferred to GOSH and was placed on the ECMO for 5 days. This treatment takes the blood out of his body, oxygenating it and then placing it back into his body.

My friends were given 2 bedroom emergency accommodation with free food, which was such a relief to know they would be close by.

After a few days and against the odds, baby M came off ECMO. The doctors could not believe what a remarkable recovery he had made and was repatriated back to KCH to continue recovery. Baby M is now 8 years old, a very happy boy, healthy with no health issues.

I’m doing 30 days of planking this June for GOSH Charity!

I’m challenging myself to do 30 days of planking this June to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity).

Every day brings new challenges at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Every day, around 750 seriously ill children and young people are seen at GOSH from all over the UK for life-changing treatment and care. Every day, doctors and nurses battle the most complex illnesses, and the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs.

And with every day I plank, I’ll be helping GOSH Charity give seriously ill children the chance of a better future.

This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support, so please help me to achieve my goal by giving whatever you can; no amount is too small to make a difference.
