I’m swimming 8km in March for GOSH Charity!
As many of you will probably know, Great Ormond Street Hospital is a place my family and I hold so dear in our hearts. I was aware of GOSH’s amazing work, but I never thought our most precious baby would be admitted and treated there. A few years ago that was the dreadful reality he faced.
I cannot begin to do justice to the compassion, expertise and care we experienced during our six month stay in hospitals. When your child is battling a disease or event of your worst nightmares, what the staff at GOSH provide feels indescribable; hope, knowledge, experience, miracles, a life-line. Our son is a testament, along with his unfathomable strength and wonder, to the world class work of the staff at Great Ormond Street.
The moment you step into GOSH you know it’s a hospital built different. From the animal named and themed wards, to the colourful lights in the lifts and theatres, to the fantastic play staff - every place you turn you’re reminded of the fact that this is a hospital designed for children who are being deprived of a normal life, without the burden of ill health. It’s a true one of a kind, with children traveling from across the UK and internationally to be treated there. Currently, a new state of the art Children’s Cancer Centre is being built and funds are needed for further life-saving developments and research. As a parent you’re always painfully aware that outcomes are not always positive and, when it comes to rare diseases, advancements still need to be made to give more children long, full and happy lives.
Everyday I am filled with gratitude for the second chance cutting-edge science and unbelievable care has given us. I will forever feel indebted to Great Ormond Street and what it has done for my son. It’s taken me a while to metabolise the past events, and anything I might do feels like a drop in the ocean. But I saw that Great Ormond Street is challenging people to swim 8km in March and thought I must take part.
I will post here with my progress and will use this as an opportunity to experience some of the unique swimming spots London has to offer. Who knows, I might even brave some cold water.
ANYTHING you can give will help make a difference at Great Ormond Street and transform seriously ill children’s lives. No amount is too small and I thank you wholeheartedly for helping me reach my goal.
