This climb's now for Lulu...

This is Lulu... or, rather, this was Lulu. I'm really very sad that I never got to meet Lulu in life, that I didn't get to see her and know her as the precious, bubbly, cheeky little monkey she very obviously was. Our lives only intersected in one, mercifully brief, moment, 9:58 AM on Saturday morning, at a literal intersection, and, tragically, that was also the last moment she'd ever have. I'll never forget her, but I wish I'd known her, and I wish I could have done anything, anything at all, to help her or her family in that instant.

The man who ultimately bears responsibility for the scene that played out Saturday morning has, thankfully, been caught. While I doubt that anything I do or advocate for will get a bollard placed where it might have saved Lulu, I'll still try to get one there. While I'll never forget, I do need to get to the place where I'm not only remembering, but that will take time and so I'm just concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other. Then I remembered that I'm going to be climbing these stairs ... that got me thinking that the one thing I could do to maybe bring some meaning to this utterly senseless tragedy is to dedicate this little fundraising effort to Lulu, because every pound raised by me raising my feet will, at the least, go to care for another child who might, just might, have survived what Lulu, sadly, didn't ever get a chance to.

Thank you to everyone who's helped me already raise a little in Lulu's name even if you didn't know it, or her, earlier... as you can imagine I've been a bit too distracted to thank you all directly. Thank you to anyone else that feels they'd like to contribute.

And, please, hug your little ones, keep them safe. And, if you're going to drive, do so with a little more care and attention than before... always keep in mind the little lives that are at stake at those little intersections you always want to rush through.

From the towpaths to the tower's top!

After my own medical issue pushed me to start walking more alongside our boat as my wife and I traveled the rivers and canals of England and Wales, I eventually got fit enough to walk the West Highland Way and the Camino Portuguese; well the Devil's Staircase in Scotland and the (many, many!) steps to Santiago in Spain aren't enough, and recently I've taken to climbing a lot of stairs as well. I went low in London, and I've been up the Hampstead Tube stairs more times than I can count, and now it's time to go high! Help me raise some cash for the wonderful people at Great Ormond Street with every step!

I’m climbing the Walkie Talkie Tower to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity!

I'll be climbing up London's iconic building on Saturday 8 March 2025, up 36 floors and 896 steps, to raise money to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer.

Please sponsor me and help to fund groundbreaking research, cutting-edge medical equipment, the rebuilding and refurbishment of child-centred facilities, and essential support services for children and their families.

Hi Mike, great to see your adventures & wishing very little gravity to your steps :). Planning to do the coastal part of the Camino Portuguese in May, so would love to get any good tips. Take good care & carpe diem!
