Diary Of A Soggy Couch Potato

Holy Moly!!  Not quite sure what just happened but I swam 30 lengths this morning!!!!!
That’s 750 metres!!!!!! That is over double my first swim for this challenge on 1st October and nearly 4 times my maximum in September.

I might have to rename this blog to:

 “Diary Of A SUPREME ATHLETE”

Now that’s definitely not something you’d ever expect to hear!

But I am really enjoying this challenge.  It exactly what I needed. A worthwhile purpose to get myself moving and I am so humbled and touched by the words of support and the generosity of you all.

Sometimes we can feel a bit lonely and isolated, even with, or maybe because of, social media.  But you have all reminded me just how many people care and just because we don’t see each other - you are all there.

And for anyone reading this who is feeling lonely- please know that your friends and family do care but they might not know that you need them to speak up! So send them that message, or pick up the phone, or just ask for help- you’ll be pleasantly surprised🥰

We all need to know we are loved and not alone and your donations will help those children who are struggling with severe illness and missing out on a normal childhood to feel the support and kindness of strangers, as well as funding a Play Team who provide enjoyable activities to aid treatment and recovery, helping to make the children’s experience in hospital as stress free as possible.

Fundraising total to date: £1095 - please keep donating - it really helps (& motivates me)
Can we reach £1200……???? 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Please click on the link in comments below picture to donate.  Thank you so so much xxx

PB 24 lengths = 600m 🏊‍♀️🥳 AND I have hit OVER the 5 km mark!!!

Total distance swam to date:  5.3 km🥳 (212 lengths)
Distance left to swim in October:  2.7km (108 lengths)

An enjoyable swim today with the pool not too busy, which I like.  I can concentrate on breathing instead of surviving the choppy waters 🫣😅.

Was also thinking about how a parent of a child needing care at Gt Ormond St Hospital (& obviously anywhere) must be impacted whilst also trying to balance parenting other children, work commitments and other responsibilities.  It can be tricky enough even when life is going to plan….(does it ever?)….
The pain of seeing your child/loved one suffer is so hard to cope with and yet they have to carry on providing support and being strong.  It shows that carers too need support and care.

From  GOSH Charity Patient and Family Experience Strategy 2025-2030:

“Help families to cope.
Having a seriously ill child can affect the wellbeing of the whole family. Patients and families at GOSH often face deep emotional challenges that touch upon every part of their lives and can make coping very difficult. Beyond the emotional impact, many families face financial pressures, such as travel expenses and time away from work, when caring for a sick child.
We will:
* Support the mental wellbeing of parents and carers while their child is in hospital.
* Provide more opportunities for families to connect with others in a similar situation to their own.
* Scope opportunities to alleviate the financial pressure of being in hospital as much as possible, to relieve additional stress on families.”

Diary Of A Soggy Couch Potato

Funds raised so far £ 1060 !!!!! Thank you all 😘😘 You are amazing people. xx

Am now over halfway through the challenge in both time and distance swum!

Rest day yesterday as I was at my new job so I went this afternoon after finishing at my GS Controls work.
Thought I was only going to do 10 or 12 lengths as I’d had a really rubbish sleep last night and was tired but once again , once I was in the water and had got over my first few and got my breathing settled, I was able to swim 22! So that’s another 550m done.

Total swum to date: 4.7 km (188 lengths) That’s 2.92 miles swum in October so far!🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️🥰🥰

Total left to swim:  3.3 km (132 lengths left)😳🤗🤗

And this is the ‘why’……

The GOSH Charity “help Great Ormond Street Hospital go above and beyond for seriously ill children, enabling kinder and better treatments, bringing hope for children with the rarest and most complex illnesses, and making hospital a little bit easier and a lot more fun for the thousands of children who are treated here every year. While the NHS funds the day-to-day running, Great Ormond Street Hospital has always depended on charitable support to make  it extraordinary. And we depend on supporters, fundraisers and partners like you to make it happen.

Together, we can give seriously ill children the best chance, and the best childhood, possible.”

Very Personal Diary Of A Soggy But Stronger Couch Potato

Mega swim today- I was like a dolphin coursing through the water..🐬🐬😂😂😂😂

Another PB of 22 lengths! 550m which is just over a 1/3mile!  But most importantly I am over half way through my challenge distance at 4.15 km swum to date!  I really had expected to need to swim twice a day near the end in order to get the lengths done!

With Mental Health Week last week, I realised how far I have come.  Last winter the (belated) emotions and mental fallout from my Long Covid experience took their toll.  My weight ballooned again to the heaviest I have ever been and I avoided going out or seeing anyone. My confidence was at rock bottom, my eating snacks was out of control and I lived in trackies to avoid confronting my size. I also struggled to get up the extra stairs to our bedroom in the loft and took evasive action to avoid having to walk very far.  I felt cumbersome. I knew the mechanisms for losing weight but kept waiting for the ‘feeling ready’ or ‘in the mindset’.  I was offered counselling by my lovely gp which I accepted.  And it has helped- immensely.
I am still a work in progress but one major thing I have learnt is that often ‘things’ can seem too overwhelming to even begin them.

But, actually, if we just look at one small thing that we can try and do……  it’s far less daunting.

For instance, I decided to have a healthy breakfast that I loved when I was previously at Slimming World. After a few days I thought that maybe I’d just visit a SW group and sit and listen. No pressure- just listen. I ended up joining. Just joining was empowering.  I also stopped at the leisure centre and asked for a tour and about memberships, and kept apologising for my size and lack of fitness. The young girl there was genuinely lovely and encouraging but I wasn’t sure if I could face joining.
The next day I decided to try a swim- not that I’ve liked swimming before.  But I thought- even if I can only swim 1 length- it’s a start and also a lot more than I’d been doing! That day I ended up swimming 4 lengths and was so thrilled.  I took out a membership and look where I am now!

As for my Slimming World journey- I’m now almost 2.5 stone lighter and wearing clothes that haven’t fitted for over a year.  I still have a long way to go to get to my target but every small step is a step closer…. And they add up!

Whatever you are trying to deal with in life, or achieve or overcome, please just take one small step ….. it soon becomes another step…. & another …… & before you know it you are making progress….   After all, that’s what life is about!

It’s the same with raising the money for Great Ormond St Hospital - every single £ adds up:

we have now together raised £1045! That’s 1045 single £1s…… joined together …. See! It does count!   Thanks to all of us together  🥰🥰🥰

The satisfaction and achievement of work in progress!

Apologies for the long post & being so open . 🥴

Diary Of A Getting Soggier Couch Potato

Funds now raised £905!!!!!!! Am SO appreciative and blown away by your generosity 🙏🙏

Another PB today 🥳🥳 - spurred on my lovely hubby Gary Stockle who kindly joined me today 🥰.
I swam 20 lengths which is 1/2 km!!!!  I cannot believe it!

I had now swum over 2 miles in total!!!
My total distance swum so far in October is 3.275 km leaving me only 4.725 km to go🤗

The belief and words of support and encouragement from you all is helping so much. It’s also extremely humbling. Thank you so much 🙏

But enough about me- do any of you have any experience of Great Ormond Street Hospital - maybe you would like to share your story with us in the comments below ……? The more people I speak to about this challenge, the more I’m shocked at just how many people have connections/experiences with GOSH- further showing why we need to support them in raising funds.

Diary Of A Tired & Soggy Couch Potato

I can’t believe it….. I’ve now swum a total of 2.4 km! Since 1st October !!!!
Look at pic below- I’ve got my over 2 km award 🎉🎉

Have been at my new job working today so I had to go swimming this evening.  It was SO HARD.  I thought I was only going to manage 6 lengths as I was struggling and I just wanted to be relaxing at home but as with anything in life - a bit of grit and determination got me to 18 lengths (450m)- and I really did focus on how the children and their families would also dearly love to be able to go home and relax and play but don’t have that luxury.  That’s another reason why it’s so important to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity so they can help these families- they are already suffering with so much.  Let’s help provide invaluable support- whether it provides play sessions for the children or facilities that allow the parents to stay overnight and be close to their children, or towards research to help develop new treatments….

Another best swim today: 18 lengths which is 450m 🏊‍♀️🤗🏊‍♀️🎉

I’m really happy with the progress I’m making- the 8km is now feeling achievable for me, not easy by any means but definitely believing that I will do it!

To think that only a few weeks ago I could only swim 6 lengths & today I improved again with 18 lengths. I do have to pause in between lengths but not for as long as I did originally.

Have just realised that 450m is the distance around a running track plus 50m……! I can’t believe I’ve managed that in a swim …… it took me just under 35mins today.

AND I’m enjoying it for the calm and peace and no interruptions…. Almost, dare I say it, enjoyable 🤣🤣🤗.

Could this be the start of a new me???! 😳😂😂😂

Your support and encouragement in response to my posts have been really pushing me on - thank you - as is the thought of how this money will be put to such good use. It makes it all so worthwhile. The picture is a message that has been sent to all the swimmers in this challenge ….. please read it and feel proud of the support you’re giving 🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰

Challenge day 6: rest

Soggy Couch Potato and Son

Today is a rest day but thought I’d keep up the posts with a pic of me and my son Will Stockle just after our win yesterday.

I am really lucky to have the support of my family in this challenge, as always.  It makes me think of how important support networks are and how this fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity will also benefit those supporting the children- it must be so difficult for them to see their loved ones going through so much.

Let’s help them all by raising as much money as possible do them all.🥰🤗. Click on the link to donate in Comments after the pic

T-4: Diary of a Couch Potato

4 days till launch 😮😮
Just got in from a training session and managed 10 lengths which is better than I thought I’d do today.  It’s getting really close now and my nerves and excitement are increasing. But my challenge is nothing compared to the awful challenges facing so many children and their families.
The Great Ormond St Hospital Charity raises vital funds to help support the needs of many many children. From funding research and buying specialist equipment to providing play leaders and equipment- trying to help these children live as normal a life as possible whilst enduring so much.   Please please donate and help me to help them.
Thank you so much 😊🙏

Swim 8Km in October for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity

12 days till my swimming challenge begins 😵‍💫💦

Donations so far received £600!! 🤗 thank you 🙏

I have already surpassed my initial target of £500 and so have now doubled it to £1000…..  🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I really hope I can beat that too as the work Gt Ormond St Hospital carry out is so incredible and the money will be well spent, helping children and their families at such difficult times.

My training has begun this week:

Wednesday was a sluggish 5 lengths but today I managed 8 which is 200m…….     progress, which is much needed if I am to achieve 8km through October….

As Dory said “just keep swimming……!”🐠🐠

If you are able to donate, even £1 would be gratefully received,  ….. many many thanks xx

Donations so far received £475 for the Great Ormond St Hospital Charity:  thank you so so much🥰

I tried my swimsuit on (bought in June for my holiday) and it is now too big to be seen in AND be as decent as I can be in a swimsuit!🫣🤣

I have, as at this evening, lost 1 stone 12lbs since I started at Slimming World 10 weeks ago!

So I have now bought a new swimsuit 2 sizes smaller 🩱🎉and have no excuse to avoid starting my trainingl!! ….

You can thank me later for not showing me wearing the new cozzy! 🤣🤣🤣

I must admit- I am feeling a little nervous and also rather daunted by my challenge. 8Km swimming is not going to come naturally to me - am currently feeling like the picture😵‍💫🤦‍♀️ but your words of support and, more importantly, your donations are driving me on.

I am blown away with the generosity of my friends and family who have sponsored me already 😊.
A heartfelt thank you to you all. 🥰

Begging letter 🙏

Please help me….☺️
Hi everyone, as you all know- I am most definitely NOT a natural athlete and have battled with my weight and health over recent years. However, I am trying to lose weight and get myself back to be able to live life fully again and I have decided to set myself a challenge that will also benefit others less fortunate than myself.
I have signed up to SWIM 8KM in OCTOBER to raise money for GREAT ORMOND ST HOSPITAL.
If any of you would be kind enough, & are able to, please could you help me by sponsoring me using the link below… even a £ will help.
In return I promise to do my very best to reach the 8KM target….  & I will post updates through out October so you can judge me and encourage me!
Thank you so much for any support you can give 😘😘
(Hideous pic from June before I started SW😬🤦‍♀️)

I’m swimming 8km in October for GOSH Charity!

I’m challenging myself to swim 8km this October to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH Charity).

Childhood is special. It should be a time of joy, wonder, curiosity and fun. Of making friends, making mistakes, and growing into the adults we become. But it’s also fragile, and sometimes all too brief.

That’s why Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity raises funds to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. For the children from all over the UK who are treated by Great Ormond Street Hospital every day, for children with rare or complex illnesses everywhere, for this generation and all those to come. Because no childhood should be lost to serious illness.

And with every kilometre I swim, and every pound raised, we’ll be helping to give seriously ill children the best chance and the best childhood possible.

Please help me to achieve my goal by giving whatever you can; no amount is too small to make a difference.
