GOSH changed our Ilan's life now let’s help them back together!

I’ve been delaying writing this fundraising post as I didn’t know how to tell you all what the last 13 months has been like for my family and I. But, I have finally found courage to spill my heart out to you all for a cause that is so close to my family's heart... GOSH! They have become our family in the last year and it's a bond that can never be broken or forgotten. Due to their care, love and treatment my 11 year old little nephew (brother’s youngest son), Ilan, was treated for Leukaemia (AML) and after many uncertainties and several challenges, he came back home to us in March 2023 after 8 months of battling to save his life and being admitted as an inpatient at GOSH.

After 2 years of isolation during Covid we had only just started normalising and socialising again, family life was gradually going back to happy times and the future was looking bright. Many of our friends and family are not aware of Ilan's diagnosis and apologies for that. llan's diagnosis not just affected him but us as a family. We are a very close knit family and when one member is in pain it resonates through every single one of us.

Ilan is the heart and soul of his house. He is the chatty one who checks up on everyone and makes sure we are ok every day with his texts or calls, he is the one who makes us all smile with his endless love and he is the one who shows us that life has to continue with a smile no matter what life throws at us. When you meet Ilan once you remember him forever and it’s this quality of his that has carried him through the toughest year of his life.

Since Ilan’s diagnosis on 30th August 2022 he has been the strongest child we have ever met! There were times when we broke down and didn't know how to regain strength to carry on but he managed to make us smile and show us we can do this together. He made us realise that together we are all stronger but who made us even stronger to battle this disease of cancer? GOSH! The way they handled not just Ilan but us as a family is extraordinary! Words can not express the support and love we had been given and continue to receive from GOSH. At a time of uncertainty with Ilan's failed transplants, the matches and mismatches of donors, the knock backs at every blood test which were not improving as well as hoped, not knowing if and when Ilan would return home, every single staff at GOSH gave us that hope we needed and also fulfilled their care and duty perfectly!

Every single staff member at GOSH goes above and beyond their duty and that was visible every time we visited. No request from us was ever too big for them. Even something as small as Ilan craving for his takeaway burger at a time when his diet was restricted. The staff taking care of Ilan managed to make a homemade burger meal look like a takeaway with the packaging and served it to him. For us as adults it's not a big deal but for a child of 11 years old who doesn't know if he will ever come back home, every single happiness means the world to them and that is what GOSH realise. They don't just treat a patient for their medical condition but everything needed for the child's mental wellbeing, play, education and care. Ilan received schooling from the teachers at GOSH and also play therapists to come, entertain and play with him every day. Kitchen staff took his meal requests and they tried their best to make sure our food loving Ilan got the best they could provide. Cleaners came in several times a day to thoroughly deep clean his room. Porters and transport staff were always ready to go with a smile no matter what time of day to transfer Ilan from one place to the other. Of course, last but not least the nurses, doctors and HCA's who managed Ilan's treatment to their best ability although they were faced with many challenges along the way.

Although Ilan is back home the care from GOSH continues every single day. Their calls and email to check up on him, blood tests and other diagnostics to check progress and ongoing support never stops.

GOSH was always a hospital I’d heard about ever since I was a child but I was never fully aware or appreciated how much they do for children not just in the UK but for children who come from all over the world. Only after Ilan was admitted did I start doing my research on them and all the work they have done in pioneering treatments. We must all support this great children’s hospital as we never know which one of our loved ones might need their treatment and care. Never in a million years did our family imagine to deal with the life changing condition of cancer, especially with one of the youngest members of our family being diagnosed with it. We had only ever heard of cancer from others or from the media.

Every week, around five children in the UK lose their lives to cancer. That’s five families who are faced with the worst news possible. GOSH cares for children with the hardest to treat cancers. Pioneering research is underway to find the most effective treatments and cures, which give hope to children and their families. But these advances have outstripped GOSH’s current cancer care facilities, and the hospital needs a new home to help deliver breakthrough therapies which will benefit children from all over the world.

A place designed with the needs of children at its heart. A place that will support every aspect of care, from diagnosis to remission and beyond.

The money raised from RBC Race for the Kids 2023 will help build a new world-class centre that will treat the child, not just their disease. A gateway for children to go on to better futures, where they not only survive, but flourish.

Please help myself and my family support GOSH by raising funds to help build the new Children’s Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Nine members of our family will be taking part in GOSH Charity’s 5k family fun run, RBC Race for the Kids and we can’t do it without your support. Please sponsor us to take on 5k for GOSH. Together we can build it. Together we can help beat childhood cancer.

Although Ilan will not be able to take part in the race due to his isolation he will be joining us virtually and even while I type this plea to you all he is asking me to ask you all for your donations, prayers and good wishes. Over the last year many of you have kindly asked how you can help us through this hard time but now we are asking you if you are able to, please help us in this great cause this would give us and especially Ilan the most happiness.
