About the Great Family Walk
Take on a family challenge this June to help build the new Children's Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and help beat cancer for more children. Lace up your trainers and walk 42 miles between you, wherever and whenever you like. Stroll through the streets, conquer the countryside or pound the pavements, it's up to you! Everyone's miles will count towards your family goal as you spend quality time together and walk the same distance as the Mount Kilimanjaro climb.
Sign up now for free to get your family fundraising page. You'll use this to track your money and your miles in a fun and interactive way for all of the family. As you reach certain milestones, you'll collect digital badges to show off your progress and encourage others to support your challenge! And we'll support you all the way to the finish line.
By taking part in the Great Family Walk, you'll be joining us to help build the Children's Cancer Centre at GOSH and helping beat cancer for more children.
We need your help to build a new home for breakthrough treatments and pioneering research, so we can help change more children's lives.
Together we can Walk it. Build it. Beat it.
Meet Sumayyah
Sumayyah was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia when she was 18 months old and transferred to GOSH. After six months of treatment, she was discharged home, but unfortunately relapsed less than six months later. Sumayyah then returned to GOSH, where she had a bone marrow transplant.
Soon after returning home again, Sumayyah became ill with graft-versus-host-disease, which means the transplanted bone marrow was attacking her body. She was put on steroids, but these caused her brain to swell with fluid. She also had seizures, and at one point was rushed to hospital to be resuscitated.
Sumayyah’s condition eventually stabilised, and she has now been in remission for four years. She’s doing well and is a happy, chatty seven-year-old who loves painting, drawing and making things.
In reaction to the plans for the Children’s Cancer Centre, Sumayyah’s mum, Amira, says: “Wow! The plans sound amazing. This kind of environment is going to be so helpful for the families who find themselves there in future years. To have everything in one space will be so useful. I think it will be great.”
About the Children's Cancer Centre
The new Children's Cancer Centre will be a world-class facility designed with children like Sumayyah at its heart. A place where children have access to play and education alongside pioneering treatments. Where families can stay together through some of the hardest moments. Where access to outdoor space is a priority, and a focus on nutrition helps fuel recovery.
With your support, we can help build the Children's Cancer Centre at GOSH and save more lives.
Together, we can Walk it. Build it. Beat it.
