About

What is the challenge?

Take on 42 miles of family fun this summer with The Great Family Walk!

Whether you’re pacing through parks, conquering countryside or strolling the city streets – you can walk your miles where, when and how you like, exploring new places or revisiting your family's favourite spots.

You have the whole of August to walk your 42 miles as a team, in little boredom-busting bursts or big, cheap-day-out chunks. It’s your family adventure, your way.

Every mile you walk counts as you work together or apart towards your goal, and every pound you raise takes us closer to a better future for children with cancer.

Why your challenge matters

Meet Aashna

Aashna was only six years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a rare type of blood cancer, and transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for treatment.

“It was scary when they confirmed it” Aashna’s mum, Alpana shared. “When you hear “leukaemia” and “cancer” you just imagine the worst. They did say that the treatment is long and there would be light at the end of it, but at that time it was difficult to comprehend.”

She began a month of intensive chemotherapy, but soon after became very unwell. Thankfully, after another month of treatment, a test confirmed that Aashna's cancer cells had been killed off.

A
ashna has now completed her maintenance chemotheraphy and is back at school, where she has been elected to the school council.

“What GOSH is trying to do in terms of this new [Children’s Cancer] Centre is really important" shares Alpana. “When Aashna was at GOSH, she did not see outside light for a 20-day stretch, I couldn’t take her anywhere. Having some outdoor spaces is so important, that is going to be amazing."

About the Children's Cancer Centre

The new Children's Cancer Centre will be a world-class facility designed with children like Aashna at its heart. A place where children have access to play and education alongside pioneering treatments. Where families can stay together through some of the hardest moments. Where access to outdoor space is a priority, and a focus on nutrition helps fuel recovery.

With your support, we can help build the Children's Cancer Centre at GOSH and save more lives.

Together, we can Walk it. Build it. Beat it.

All the funds raised from The Great Family Walk will go towards the development of cancer care at Great Ormond Street Hospital. In the event that costs change, or the needs of the hospital or patients change, we reserve the right to redirect funds for use against the hospital’s most urgent needs.
