I’m stepping up for seriously ill kids

For anyone who knows me, you’ll know two things: I avoid stairs whenever humanly possible, and I certainly don’t run unless something is chasing me! So signing up to climb the iconic 20 Fenchurch Street – better known as the Walkie Talkie – is completely out of character.

But when one of my best friends, Katerina, asked me to join her in climbing the Walkie Talkie to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, in memory of her beautiful daughter Maria, there was only ever going to be one answer: yes.

The challenge itself is no small feat – hundreds of steps to the top of one of London’s most famous skyscrapers – but it’s nothing compared to the mountains that so many children and families face every single day. Great Ormond Street Hospital does extraordinary work, supporting children through unimaginable journeys that no child or parent should ever have to endure. The care, dedication and hope they give to families during the darkest times is truly incredible.

So despite my very unsporty body and very unfit condition, I feel deeply privileged to be part of Katerina’s team. Every step I climb will be for Maria, and for all the brave children cared for at GOSH.

Maria, you were such a bright light — full of life, personality, and joy. We are so privileged to have met you, played with you, laughed with you and danced with you. You will never be forgotten.
